I haven't done one of these posts in a while, mainly because nothing new has come out in the greasy snack food category. I have had some chips and stuff, but it's more along the lines of your run-of-the-mill sour cream n' onion variety. A few weeks ago, I happened to pass by the chip aisle and saw these:
So I brought them home and pulled apart the top of the bag which revealed these:
So how did they taste?
Well, they were actually really good! They didn't offer the level of hotness that I wanted, but I certainly felt a hint of burning in my mouth from them. Furthermore, if you look closely at the bag, in the bottom corner, near the chili, are a few basil leaves. I was surprised that they have a slight hit of basil flavor after the chili taste. It's not strong, but it's just enough to help these chips have some other kind of taste.
Final score: 8/10
I really liked these. I think they're the best non-American flavor of chips which I don't think you can get in the States. And if you can find them here in the U.S., go out and give them a try. I liked the subtle hit of basil, combined with the slight heat from the chili. Combine that with the fried potato flavor, these things are just bomb. You probably could just fry up some hash browns with basil and dump some hot sauce on them and get the same kind of taste, but these come in a big plastic bag and require no effort from you. So it's well worth it. Go get some right now!!
I realize that I haven't done one of these in a while, so here we go...
Lots of stuff junkfood you get in the store is (sort of) hard to get in the States. I covered a few of them before which, if you've been following along, I've found some are good, and some are not. This time around, I decided to try one that really didn't seem all that appetizing...
I've seen these in the store for a while but really never wanted to try them. I dunno... Something about it kinda irks me... But then I thought, when would I ever eat stuff like this ever again? I mean, you know... If it's bad, I definitely know not to go back to the well on this, and if it happens to be good, well, I guess I could gorge on these things while I'm here...
The bag has the same type of art that the other Lay's chips have on them. They very politely try to show you what kind of ingredients went in to make these, even though, as we all saw with the ketchup chips, that they basically spray some powder all over them... No real pickles ever touched these bad boys... But as an aside, who's the guy that does these illustrations? I'd love to have that job... Get up in the morning. Go to the studio. Paint some pictures of potato chips... Nice!
Anyway, I opened it up and here's what I got:
So they weren't as green as I was expecting, which is good. I was a little worried that they'd have some really weird green powder all over them, sorta like the weird hot pink powder on those ketchup chips. I'm not sure what those little black flecks are, but I assume that's the dill? I hope it's not like a billion little fried ants or something... Anyway, they looked ok enough.
So how'd they taste?
Have you ever eaten those salt & vinegar chips? These sort of taste like those, except that they don't have as strong of an acidic bite to them. They're a little sour 'cuz they're supposed to taste like pickles after all... But it's not at all as potent as the vinegar chips. There is a kind of dill taste to them, and I don't know if that's from the black flecks or if it's from the chemical powder they sprayed on the chips. I suppose it doesn't matter much. Overall, they were fairly pleasant, but I don't know if I'd eat these all the time. I guess if you really like pickles then you'd like these but, if you like pickles, then you've probably eaten better pickles than what you taste with these chips... And why would you eat potato chips if you like pickles?
Final Score: 6.5/10
They are tasty, and not nearly as disgusting as the ketchup chips. The slight vinegar taste goes nice with the potato chips. It's sorta like how some people like to put vinegar on french fries... As I said before, I don't think I'll eat them again, just because I don't find them particularly appetizing. I think you have to have a certain taste for this kind of stuff to really like them. But I guess Lay's makes a ton of money off people like me who waste money on weird flavors of potato chips.
Anyway, there ya go... Dill pickle potato chips. Kinda good. Kinda gross. But not bad, all things considered.
UPDATE: I modified the score. Scroll down to see why...
The last time I was at the grocery store, I saw these bad boys sitting on the shelf in the chips aisle.
Well, obviously, since I have a photo of them, I have since gone back and purchased them. And I will now share with you all the experience of Canadian ketchup chips!
As you can see by the bag, it's clear that Lay's uses potatoes and tomatoes and a little dish of ketchup to make each and every crunchy bite of these chips. The color, however seems a bit odd... No? I mean look at those chips up there. How does a potato become that color?? "It's probably just the graphics...", I thought.
And then I opened the bag...
"NO WAY!!!", I thought to myself. "That's really fucked up...". This is what was awaiting me inside.
The chips had some kind of hot pink-colored powder dumped or sprayed all over them. They looked a lot more like the picture on the bag than I thought. To be honest, this looked pretty unappetizing and I was regretting the whole decision to eat these things.
The other funny thing is that I thought Canadians put vinegar on their fries. Which, if that's true, then why make the ketchup chips? Seems like America would be first to have these. But then maybe for Canadians, this is like quirky foreign food or something.
Anyway, how did it taste?
Well, surprisingly (or not surprisingly), they tasted similar to the Salt and Vinegar chips that I get from time to time. But these had some weird note of sweetness. All the ketchups that I've had back home, don't taste so sour. The best one is still Trader Joe's ketchup. Apparently, Canadians aren't up on this whole ketchup thing and think that it's just salt and vinegar with sugar added.
It was kind of disgusting on the one level, mainly because it tastes like no ketchup I've ever had. But if you just think of it as salt and vinegar chips, it's not too bad.
Score: 5.5/10
Yes, I lowered the score. I tried them again today (Wed 7/24) and well, I don't think I liked them as much as I did at first. They're actually kinda disgusting... But not so disgusting that I would toss them out...
